Health & Fitness News | Premier Training International's Official Blog ...

On the back of the recent success by the three equestrian teams at London 2012, over the next few years we are likely to see a boom in the number of riders wanting to get fit and realising their full potential. Often a rider is seen as purely a pilot, with the horse being the real competitor.?

This simply?isn't?true - put a beginner on Valegro (the Gold medal winning horse in the individual dressage, ridden by Charlotte DuJardan) and they will probably end up on the floor, much like you may do on a donkey at Blackpool!?For years riders have been doing themselves a disservice, by spending hours preparing the horse for competition, but not themselves.

Riders may think nothing of spending ?80 for a physiotherapy or McTimmoney session for a horse, or ?200 on ?this seasons? rug, but ask a rider if they go to a gym or use a trainer, they will probably laugh, before asking are you serious!

Yes, the best way to get fit is to ride; however there are many things that can be done to get the most out of the time in the saddle. It is also likely that how we ride might be being compromised by muscle imbalances or a lack of stability. So, here is a basic, functional programme outline designed specifically for a rider in mind.

Cardio: 5 mins cross trainer Dynamic flexibility (10 reps each): Squat to overhead swing, lunge and rotate, dynamic backline release
Seated Swiss ball cable pull
Seated Swiss ball cable push
Rotational shoulder press
4 each leg, single leg lift
Static stretch (20-30 secs each): Gastroc, pecs, adductors, hip flexors, lats, quads, hamstrings, glutes
